Idle Probs And Funny Noise

I finally got my 3.0 v6 (95 4runner) back together after a blown headgasket. It runs but sounds like it may be missing during idle, although when i give it gas, it sound solid and gets up and goes (as much as this motor can). I have it timed at 10 btdc which is what I read in the fsm. Also while it is idling, it sounds like it is blowing out air about every ten seconds, kind of a faint puff or pop sound. Any ideas will help. I plan on getting an obd II within in the next couple of days, but I would like some input. Thanks.

Keep in mind I am a four-cyl guy but it sounds to me like timing or maybe valve lash. Time it per factory specs and then adjust the valves (I think its a dealer service on the 3.0)
