Idle and high speed noise problem

I am just starting to maintain my 1992 4cyL 22re pickup...new to auto-maintenance but so far so good! I have an idle issue - my idle rpms are erratic, sometimes 1500+, other times normal, under 1000 (or wherever I have set the idle screw). If I'm stopped in neutral and it's idling high, I rev once or twice and it will go down to the set speed. Right now I am thinking maybe it's a TPS issue - eg. coolant circulation; electronic problem (resistance too high, bad TPS or dirt, etc. in the terminals); settings). Just recently at higher speeds - 55 to 75 - the engine makes a loud noise - somewhat like high rpms, except that my rpms relative to the speed are fine, same as always, no overheating, oil pressure and level fine. It's almost like road noise but it's not. Don't know the two issues could be related. Except for the idle issue, it has been running fine with new plugs, fuel and oil filters, air filter that I've changed. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks :o)

Lube the throttle cable and linkages.

Hard to diagnose noises without a video.

^--- x2 more than likely a "sticky" throttle for idle issue.

-Clean throttle body and lubricate/adjust throttle cable.

22re Idle should be 750 however anywhere between 750-1000 is ok depending the timing and your preference.

As far as the noise... may wanna be a little more specific maybe a video clip?

Worn timing chain components show alot of noise at high rpms at times..

-Low on oil?

-Correct oil weight?

Maybe a heat shield rattling somewhere? On the cat perhaps? Or the element inside the cat may be broken up or degraded?

I'll try to tackle the throttle body and cables and see how that works. The oil level is fine with about 1500 miles on it...I believe I put in 10w30 per toyota's recommendations. Will check for the high speed noise again when I get it up to speed, see if I can record it. Thanks to all for the help!

I lubed the throttle cables....also was a little low on coolant so added some....erratic idle went away - holds steady now wherever I set the idle screw, good deal! Still have the higher engine noise at high speeds but I'm noticing it really sounds like hollow air-like noise - not really from inside the block - maybe the exhaust, the cat as someone mentioned (?) It's not that loud...I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks for advice :o)
