I need good manuals
I bought my first Toyota a week ago (85' pickup, 22re) and am looking for some suggestions on what manuals I should buy. I've been wrenching on stuff for a long time and I am pretty good at it, however I'm really green when it comes to the Toyota engines. I will be doing a complete rebuild of my engine and will need a good manual. I was wondering if anybody knows of a manual other than chiltons or Haynes that is worthwhile? Is there a good manual dedicated specifically to the 22re? My lack of knowledge of this engine is getting frustrating. When i bought the truck it ran really bad and I spent an entire weekend trying to figure out why and never did. I just happened to be talking to some kid in the parking lot of our local Fred Meyer who came up to me to talk yota talk. He heard the way the truck was running and said "sounds like your TPS needs to be adjusted" I've always driven fords and have never heard of an adjustable TPS before so I looked at him like he was stupid. He sensed my thoughts and got a phillips screwdriver out of his truck and adjusted the TPS and the damn thing started running A LOT better!! I was flabbergasted! So, the moral of the story is, I need a good manual!!

Thanks for the manual! It has already explained a lot.
How do you like the 4.88 with the 33's? How is it on the highway? My truck came with 33 inch BFG all terrains and stock gears. It's o.k. around town and on the highway but sucks in the dirt. I was thinking 4.56 because I will still need to be able to cruise down the freeway and at least do the speed limit.

Obviously I can't answer for malteserunner specifically, but I can crunch a couple numbers for you and guess how that gearing with those tires works.
33" tires are approximately 15% larger diameter than stock. 4.88s are approximately 19% higher gear ratio than stock. So, the engine will run about 4% faster at any given speed than stock, so probably on the order of 150-200 RPM faster than stock at freeway speed. Should be fine.
malteserunner - did I get that right?
