Oka, so I was thinking when I should Rebuild my engines (3VZE,5VZE) and was wondering at how many miles did U guys decide to do it?
- Goes for 20R,22R,22RE,and 22RTE as well

172,000 miles rebuilt due to spun rod bearing, no choice in my case. And that was a completely toasted bearing who knows how long it was making noises before I bought the truck, but I put like 5,000 miles on it while it was knocking after I had bought it and it finally let go. 22R BTW.

installed a rebuilt 22re at 212,000. Old engine ran fine but had a minor hg leak in a cooling jacket around cylinder #4. Was like that for years and ran fine. Just added a little coolant here and there. Only reason for installing a motor was i wanted to upgrade the head, cam, exhaust, intake, and other things and wanted to start fresh on the bottom end. Oh yeah the timing chain rattled like a nickel in a coffee can.

haha..I think she'll atleast make it to 200K she just needs some TLC every now and again..I keep everything maintained on a regular basis..had all the fluids flushed about 1K ago..running Valvoline High Mileage 10W-30 Fully Synthetic in it..and Recent NGK Spark Plugs and NGK wires in it about 2K ago along with a New Distributor Cap..All on the '92 BTW

Leaked like a stuck Havalina...
100# or so compression
Was Mysteriously loosing coolant, REALLY slowly, but surely, lol...
BAD missing and bottom end noise(later found out that miss, which only got worse after build, was partly due to a REALLY bad cam)
Harmonic was REALLY sloppy with play(found out my cog-key was around 1/16" left before snapping off completely, ...FHEWWWWWW, eh? lol)
50MPH MAX up the Grapevine, Cahon Pass, Glacier Park Pass....etc. (NOW 65 EASY )
It had NEVER been rebuilt before that.... Only a timing chain done at 150K...
Build and Troubleshooting stuff in Sig, below.

Why would you rebuild an engine if you didn`t have to??
When something gets to the point it no longer works like it should that is when you make those decisions .
Maybe you want to build an engine for a spare to have if the one in the vehicle dies.
These are my thoughts on daily drivers race cars are a different breed.
Bottom line it is your vehicle do what makes you happy

don't try to fix what isn't broken.
theres no set mileage on when you should rebuild the motor......you rebuild it when it starts giving you trouble with the internals (bearings, rings, HG failure/leakage, stuff like that).

Rebuilt my 3VZ-E at first at 68,000 (under previous owner) for a spun rod bearing and then at 231,000 (my ownership) because of a blown head gasket resulting in a chipped piston. Could have just replaced the piston, but didn't want to take any chances.

I hear and feel those who say, "Wait til it quits".... However; as in my case> I was loosing coolant(not from an external leak), I was loosing tons of oil(Front and rear main AND pan), I was getting lots of bearing/crank noise, I was doing the timing chain anyway(tons of slap), time for a clutch...and, well, when one is going to pull the head for HG, pull a large portion for the timing cover for a chain replacement, pull the exhaust for a good leak, pull the plenum and intake for a good cleaning, pull the pan that's leaking bad......WHY NOT, at that point, rebuild? It was so much easier(IMHO) to just pull the motor and get it all done while out.
Not forgetting to mention again; When I broke the crank bolt, the harmonic basically just fell on the ground, because the Cog Key was basically hanging on by a hair.
I don't know, while I FULLY agree that there is 'NO SET MILEAGE' where it is "TIME"...IF> you're losing oil, power due to bad compression, need to do a clutch and/or timing chain...why not at least give the top and bottom end(if you're pulling the pan due to a bad leak like mine) a look? It's really not that expensive to just do the entire thing. However, if even a few hundred bucks is a fortune and/or not available for the moment(been there myself).... Sure, do only what you HAVE TO in order to keep it going. Agreed!

I think some of you guys are getting me wrong here lol..I was just wondering what the average mileage on it, would be before some of the internals start going bad and you have to rebuild.
