how do you ID a transmission?

how can i ID my transmission? i dont think its the stock one so how do i tell what it is, i need to have it rebuild and im trying to find out what its going to cost. and were do i look to find the part number?

Your tranny guy should be able to ID it. marlin crawler has a photo page you can use. There is also the casting numbers that give the type and year, haven't seen a chart for these but the info is there. The original ten digit part number was on a sticker and likely hasn't survived. Best bet is the marlin website..

What kind of vehicle are we talking about? Year, model, what engine is in it, 2wd 4wd?

its a 87, but its not the stock tranny. its 4wd 22r. when i get done cleaning it i will post some pictures of it, it also has a locking nut on the back of the counter shaft.

I bet its a G52. Forward shift transfer case?

yes, thats what im thinking but i think the imput bearing is bigger that 80x20mm and thats what marlin says

Hmm looking at marlins chart it says G52 ended in '85 but my '87 had one from the factory? Even says so on the VIN plate.
