well the seal went out on my transfer case on my toyota. is it worth it to tear apart and replace on ones own or is it worth spending the the extra money to take it to the shop?

Which seal?

Depends on how mechanically inclined you are and if you have the tools and know how?

Persistence always beats resistance.

Not sure how much more complicated the 96 t-case is compared to my 83, but mine is pretty simple. Like wabbit said, it depends on where it's leaking from, and what kind of repairs you've done or are comfortable with. It would certainly be really cheap if you did it yourself. None of those gaskets are expensive.
