High idle at cold start
95 Runner
272,000 mi.
3. super slow
Owned my 4Runner for about a month now and it seems to be a never ending hassle, but a loving hassle. Since day one when started cold in the morning it idles at 1500 rpm and smokes a white gassy smelling smoke. It takes 5-8 mins.(if sitting and not driving) to drop down to 500 rpm (normal?) . As it's dropping in rpm the smoke decreases and stop once at normal temp. and rpm. When it's idling high if I drive away it sputters and almost stalls unless i let off the gas and drive out of the lane at high idle speed. Any ideas on what is the cause or is this somewhat normal? Was reading a little on cold start injector, would this be the cause?

All fuel injected cars will idle high on a cold start. Its to warm the engine up faster.
The white gassy smelling smoke is most likely coolant. Signs of a failing headgasket. I had this problem on my honda after awhile. If the smoke stops once the car is warmed up its not a serious problem because the expansion of the metals due to heat sealed everything back up again.
I wouldn't worry about the headgasket until you start having more significant problems down the road.
