Well, you should list your vehicle's spec's so we can help you on where to start. Best thing to get is a decent socket/wrench set from Cambodian Tire when they have some good sales. Keep an eye out for wrench sets and etc.
Remember you want to get metric wrenches and etc. for Toyotas.
If you werent in Cranbrook I'd offer some wrenching help.
A good way to begin learning is a tune up. So some oil, plug wires, plugs, pcv valve. Just small baby steps to get you familiar with your vehicle and build some confidence.

Go to the local parts store and pick up a Chiltons service manual for your vehicle. About $20 and they will serve you well for starting out. Get a ratchet wrench set and some nice crescent wrenches. You will need mainly metric size, but once in a while you will need a standard. The most common sizes are 10mm, 12mm, 14mm and 17mm on our vehicles for general maintenance. The transmission and differential plugs I think are like 23mm. That should get you started. The Chiltons will be helpful for just starting out
What vehicle do you have?

hey all, im sort of in the same boat as the guy in the first post. I just bought my 1st toyota (93 4runner 22re) and wanted to do a tune up on it. i started by changing the belts yesterday. I adjusted them after a bit of whining, and it was fixed for a few hrs and then started whining again, so i retightened them, and it still whines. can they be too tight, or are they still lose?

i'll do the rest of the tune up in the next few days, but i'm not sure where the pcv valve is located?? thanks for any help you can give.....and what a great website/community type thing this yotatech is (especially the search button)

Its possible they are too tight. Try tightening them a little more first. Also, the bearings in one or more of the pulleys could be going out.
The PCV valve is on the top of the valve cover, essentially the top of the engine. Its the first large hose right after the oil cap.

Wait. Correction:

Its the large vac hose towards the rear of the valve cover.

help

ok my truck is a 22re 1990 4x4 4cyl 4runner. Now it died about a week ago in mid idle at about 2000 rpm. it was a rebuilt engine. It is over 200000 km's but i am not exact on where will post that tomorrow. my friend who i bought it off of and knows his truck rather well checked my fuses oil antifreeze and rotor i Believe. altho it was making a rattling noise before it died for about a week. Now I am not very knowledgable on maintenance. Although I am willing to learn and experiment with it because I would want to know what ticks under the hood please help if you can
