guidance on new truck

I am shopping for a new truck. I am really not sure on the year and overall make up of the truck I am looking for. I was thinking 1994 toyota 22RE xtracab 4x4 4banger. However I am open to possible change.
What I do know is this. I need a 4x4, i want a manual truck. I will be moving to the reno,NV area very soon. So this should give you the idea of the type of area the ttruck will be running in.
This is my thought pattern on this buy. I want a near stock a few very few mods. I want this to be a truck that my son will be happy to own one day. Think toyota twin turbo supra last yr they made it. This will give you a idea of the type of piece of history i want to buy. I plan to use this vehicle not make it a garage queen. The michael J fox truck is a piece of history, just a little to old for what I am after. EFI is a must. Please let me know what your thoughts are. I have and will be crusing this wonderful forum.

Long live Forums the true source of vehicle info.

If this is what you want go for it!!!

I think it is a little Foolish to limit yourself to just one production year. You may be looking long and hard to find one that fits your ideal of a truck.

How much work are you looking to do??

How much can you do.

Remember your looking at a 18 year old vehicle limit your search to the Southwest ??

Good luck

I agree with wyoming that small of a limit is going to be tough, not saying it isnt doable though. To widen your search I would suggest an 89-94. The really only big changes was the switch to an electrical speedo in 92 and changing the badge on the grill from Toyota to the Emblem. Sounds like you are headed in the right direction otherwise.

Unless you just want the newer style, the 85-88 is really the same truck as well in the EFI model.

I don't think those years came with factory pink

Seriously, search your local classifieds and those in your general area as finding a Toyota on a forum will be more expensive.

If you can swing it, I would get a tacoma with the 2.7 4 cyl motor. More power and better mpg. it will also come with a better suspension

sounds like you know what you want, 4x4 xtra cab.

i would look for something suitable from 85 and up, depends more on what you can find,
and the condition/price for your budget.

I had a 94 xtra cab 22re, I loved it. A lot of problems because the guy before me tore the crap out of it, but it was a good looking, considerably powerful truck for a 4banger, and I loved the 5spd. 4 low will get you anywhere in the world, especially in 1st gear. I miss my yota.

Thank you all for your thoughts and posts. I do not plan to limit myself to only a single year. I was only saying what i came up with to that point. I agree on the southwest area.
I thought that there was body changes from 89 to 94?
On a one to ten scale how rare is the 89 22rte 4 banger pickup with xtracab and 4x4?
I have been apart of a few forums as mod for one. So I know the true power of forums. I want a long term yota that myself and others go wow when they see it. Not just looks but guts as well. It is hard: to gleam years and years of knowledge to come up with that answer by myself. This is why i have brought the question to you gentlemen. Let the brain storming begin lol.

Hey since you are moving to Reno, don't forget to look in their classifieds. There are A LOT!! I got my 4runner by searching in Reno. A clean 3rd gen pickup usually goes for about $3-$4,000 and they go fast!

there is not one yota that is outstanding over the others, like the rare supras.

i guess the earlier yotas fixed up nice or in original condition are getting harder to find and are gaining in value.
drawbacks are they have less room than newer models.

i say find one in good shape or one to fix up the way you want it, and enjoy.

bone collector did bring up a good point, a newer taco will have more power and better suspension.

that being said i like my 88, had it over 12 years 185k mi, swapped in a 3.4 v6 and love it even more. i plan on doing long travel suspension, supercharging it and just keep on wheelin...

if your stuck on a year. 1994 is a good year. I love the room of my 94 ex cab. it is SSOOOO much more room then the 86-89 ex cabs. As much as I like the IFS in the 86-95 trucks the newer 96 + tacoma suspension is much smoother, flexier and easier to work on. i dont know the first year of the 2.7 but i know people are transplanting in place of the old 22re. So that should tell ya something. All in all it is you truck and it comes down to what you want it for and how much you can afford. happy hunting

best advice i could give is to find different years of yotas on a car lot and take them for a test drive.

i have driven or owned all the yota engines, 4 and 6 cyl, from the 20r, 22re, 2.7, 3.0, 3.4
and i can tell you the 2.7 is by far the best 4 cyl in a yota.
have not driven a 4.0 yet.

i think 96, first year of the taco was when the 2.7 came out.
just remember to check for frame rot before you buy a taco.

blue one is 89 to 95 just before tacoma.

the purple one is 84 to 88.

84/85 have solid front axle, sfa, 86+ have independent front suspension, ifs.

older yotas are cooler, i know i own one lol.
