Getting in over my head with my axle.

I recently took apart my right side hub to find the cause of some serious vibrations and noise and found that my axle is loose in the spindle. This is the first time ive done this and have no idea why the axle has so much play. the boot on the back side is torn open and grease is everywhere. you can grab the joint at the back of the spindle and pull the axle out as far as you can without removing it and shake it from side to side. Anybody have any ideas. Appreciate any help at all. Thanks!
