gearing setup tranny/rear diff etc help
i am new to most of this and kinda crash course my way thrue everything with tons of questions research and help first time for everything. i currently have a 1984 toyota pickup with a 4 speed manual 22r. everything stock drivetrain wise ive done research and im assuming its got the 4.10 differential in the rear and i do alot of freeway driving and can barely hit 65 without it sounding like the engine is going to blow "high rpm". im swapping to a rebuilt 22re out of an 86 4x4 that had a w56 "cant use sadly" so i just baught a 2wd 5 speed i was told it came out of a 91 pickup i think is what he said but not sure is there a way to tell off the tranny? "i could post pics of it maybe someone can tell just by seeing it??" hopefully this 5speed will do the trick get me at least 10mph more for the freeway. friend told me i should change the rear differential as well, and from what ive read the next step would be a 3.90 assuming i have the 4.10 would this be a good idea? maybe pick up the rear diff gearing or the whole axle off an 81 pickup ive read that they had that gearing would this work? any help or advice input on gearing setups or on what ive got goin on would be awesome. truck in my sig is the project lol

1. You have no sig for there to be a project truck in.
2. 2WD & 4WD gears are not interchangeable in most cases. As most 2WDs have 7.5" axles, while all 4WDs have 8" rear axles.
3. 3.90 would probably work fine. But in 81 there were no 2WD ½ tons with 3.90, only 3.91.
4. 84 2WD 7.5" gear ratios are 3.91(diesel only), 3.73, 3.58, or 3.42, with an 8" 4.10 for 2WD 1 tons(camper or commercial cab & chassis). So you don't have 4.10 anyway. And you don't need 3.90 if you want to go with higher gearing, because you already have atleast 3.73(or higher) gears. So 3.90 would be lower(not higher) than whatever gears you've got.
5. Yes, post pics of it.
6. Since you got no response in your other thread here's one. NO a 4WD transmission will not work in a 2WD without modification.

OH in regards to the gearing and current tranny in my truck could it be different then the regular pickups sold to the public because my father baught it from a bug company "the yellow bug trucks" who had it made new in 84 for their company so maybe a comercial setup vs the usual consumer setups? just a thought as to why its geared the way it is unless all of the 84s with a 4speed go like 50mph i wouldint know lol. stupid questions but whatever

What you need to do is check the axle code. All this guess work trying to figure out the axle gear ratio is pretty silly really. When it's permanently stamped onto the information plate that's riveted to the vehicle(should be on the firewall behind the engine on an 84). Unless it's G292(or F292) then you DON'T HAVE 4.10 gears. It could also be F302(3.73), F372(3.58), or F382(3.42).
That looks like a W55 transmission.

I wouldn't know exactly what you'd need to do to get the speedometer situation squared away. But there's probably a way it can be done if you try hard enough.
Good luck!
