i have a rebuilt 22ret 5 spd manual that is getting 16 mpg, which doesn't seem right. I'm driving it nice, i have 31s all terrain tires. The rebuilt motor probably has about 12,000 miles on it now. What the hell is going on, is there something wrong or is it just not broke in yet??? i thought i should be getting at least 20 mpg.
I can get a lil over 200 miles to a tank

 

31s are bigger than what came on it probably. Look at the door sticker.
Want high mpgs? Run smaller tires or regear.

i feel your pain,i get 200 to 250mi per tank. i have an 88 4x4 xtra cab pu 22re pullin 31s. it would probably do better if i drove it easy but who can drive a 22r easy?lol it helped hp and mi when i went with a downey header and2.5 exhaust /cold air intake. have 261k on truck 3.4 swap in process hopin for 20+ mpg with bigger motor/hp torque

 

i've got a brand new 22re with about 10k on it. running 33's with 4.88s. i drive a mix of in-town stop n' go, and on the highway doing speeds of 70mph.

i'm averaging 15mpg.

the '88 4Runner brochure says my 5spd could get 19/22hwy with 225/75s (28") so i'm in the ball park.

 

WOW some of those stats above on the 22re seem low. I get 19/23 on my 94 flatbed with 33's and 4.88's

 

I have a 3.0 and a 3.4 with 31s on both.. I have never seen 20mpg in ither one of them. The 3.4 gets at best 18.75 and the 3.0 gets 18 flat.

 

to the O.P. are you correcting for speedometer/odometer differences because of the larger size tires? You need to do this if you haven't regeared the truck. You might pick up 1 or 2 mpg. And remember the turbo motor is gonna use a little more fuel then a 22re.

200 miles and 16 mpg = about a 13 gallon tank, thought they only put 17 and 19 gallon tanks in these body styles.

 

i gotta question on this i've never been clear on.

if you HAVE regeared, does that correct the speedo? or do you still need to swap the speedo cable drive gear?

 

I have the exact same set up except that my new motor is not a turbo and I have a 2 1/2 inch exhaust. I keep track of my fuel mileage obsessively. With the 31 inch tires the mpg needs to be adjusted up by the percent difference on the odometer vs the actual mileage. On my 4runner I checked the mileage many times with a good gps and came out with a 10% difference more in actual mileage vs the mileage on my stock odometer. This makes for a very convenient conversion factor in my case of 1.10.
For example if you have the same amount of error on your odometer due to larger tires as I do (10%) then 16.0 X 1.10 = 17.6 mpg.
I am getting about 19.25 mpg in my 4runner. (17.5 X 1.10 = 19.25)

 

Regearing will change the odometer and spedo. The spedo displays the output speed of the transmission / drive shaft. If the wheels are geared and sized correctly then the spedo will be correct. Having the spedo correct is not as important to me as having the gearing and tires work for how I use the truck.

 

Do u think new fuel injectors would work, because i still have the orginal ones. Before the rebuild i was averaging 18-20 city and highway.

 

For what it is worth I had mine rebuilt by RC engineering.

 

you might try some of the fuel injector cleaners i never have myself another thing to think about is the gas you are running the ethanol or alcohol really decreases mileage just a thought
