I run either mobil1 15-50 synthetic or castrol syntec 5-50 in the summers, and 10-30 synthetic with a quart of lucas in the winters.

seems to be the only way to shut these things up.

On the cheaper side, valvoline next gen has lots of moly in it, which is the anti wear additive in synthetics. So that has lots of potential. Probably use that next oil change.

 

also, as someone in the fast lube industry, dont believe all this crap about parafin and penzoil.

It was probably true 20 years ago, but pennzoil is now the first oil company to meet all the new oil specs, it was the first oil to meet the new gf-5 specification. also the first oil to meet the gm dexos spec along with mobil 1. pennzoil just has a bad rap from people hearing horror stories from their grampas.

A year or two ago I read a thread on the BMW forums of two identical motors being built and run for a track day. One with penz, one with Mobil 1 and them both torn down. The motor with penz had a lot of metal in it and deep scoring in the cylinder walls. Proof enough for me.

Ps-if you do run synthetic you need to change it in spring time as big temperature changes ruin the viscosity modifiers that help synthetic oil flow better at cold temperatures. (the number one reason to run synthetic oil in my opinion)

Hot Rod ran a similar test years ago with various synthetics. I remember Royal Purple and Amsoil coming out on top. I believe Mobil1 was pretty close behind for all practical purposes. I don't remember much else.
That would be a cool article to find again; I may have to look through my years of back issues!

 

SAE 30 Brad Penn, it protects like synthetic, has zinc, but is Dino oil.

I'm new to this website and I currently in process figuring out what engine oil I should be using for 22-RE with 65,000 miles original miles (1984 5 speed manual). Any suggestion/comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

I am running rotella T6 syn in my freshly rebuild 22re. Homedepot actually has it locally for around $22 a gallon so I am giving it a try. Started with royal purple break in and went to the T6. If I don't like it after a while I will go with just the good old Rotella dino oil.

 

Thirty two years old, 65,000 miles. You keep right on paying the dealership whatever they want like whoever babied it up till now. Lol

If you can ask the PO what is in it, then stick with it.

If you are proactive on your maintenance the brand's are generally interchangeable, that is if you are going to change it on schedule or more a store brand probably isn't going to be what breaks it.

You don't mention your location, the weather is your biggest factor in choosing the weights.

 

I bought the truck from the original owner back in May 2016. I didn't ask what engine oil he used. He generally did not use the truck for the past 15 years he only had a couple thousand miles since the truck was stored in the garage, (he lived in Northern CA and the truck was in Southern CA), and so he would only turn the engine on when he came down to so cal to check his property and the truck. I live in southern CA which does not have 'cold' weather average is 50 F and hot weather at around 90 F average.
