Figuring out a 5 Speed swap

So basically, lets say Im getting an 88 4runner 22re that is in amazing shape.
The thing is, its an automatic, and I dont want that, especially after dealing with the one in my 3.0L.

Ive searched, and searched to no prevail on much on this topic.

How hard is it to do a 5 speed swap? I am lost when you guys whip out your j684 and y75 tranny models.

I want to know basically what I need, how long it should take, and a cost approx.

Any help from members who have done this would be greatly appreciated!

I have never done a auto to manual swap but I have swapped aroudn a bunch of transmissions.

1st any toyota transmission will bolt up to a 22R

You want a W series or R series tranny they can handle the power better of a 22RE.

L43 is a POS 4 speed out of a 1st gen dont buy it
G54 came stock with 22R
W56 came stock with a 22RE

$100 to $300 for a running W56 on CL without the transfer case in my area

good luck finding a R151 used they came out of the turbos

If you want a perfect tranny buy one off marlins site or take a used one into a tranny shop for a rebuild or youcan go to the junk yards they typically have an accurate conditions of motors and trannys

What could be hard about the swap ? remove auto tran, cut holes in tranny tunnel for shifters, deal with electrical crap, install standard tranny and transfer, deal with covering up holes with shifter boots and stuff, remove auto shifter linkages

maybe there is something I am missing IDK never swaped auto to manual so i coudl be full of it

good luck man

You could always hold out for one with a manual transmission. It might be easier.
