Definitely seeing a pattern! The guy said it has a front locker, he didn't know anything more specific though. Any tips on how to identify it without taking anything apart?

It sounds like I need manual lockers. It's going to spend probably 90% of it's life on pavement so it seems like I should save my tires by keeping it unlocked all the time then just lock it when I go offroad, right? I read the stickies and did some searching, and that seems like the best route to me unless I'm missing something.

Also, the front bumper on it doesn't have a receiver on it, and no real recovery points. Should I weld on some attachments with d-rings or plan on replacing the whole thing eventually?

I saved enough money to do the project all at once, just want to make sure I'm buying the right parts. I appreciate all the help, you guys have been great. And more tolerant of newbs than I expected.

 

Its important to know that locking hubs are not the same as a locking differential.

See how THATGUYS truck has those 2 hooks coming from the front end, that a stock feature and can easily be added if your have been removed. Easily found at most junkyards.

Lockright? I've always heard bad things about those. I believe they have the nickname "Lockwrong" because they always break

 

Hmm, I've had a lockright in my rear diff for 3 years and a lockright in my front diff for 2 years. I've wheeled everything from Moab to trails in Arizona and some of the trails at The Hammers in Johnson valley. Not to mention the numerous other places I've been. I haven't had one issue with my lockrights and I'm able to recommend them because of that.

I guess I probably shouldn't judge until I actually put one in my truck. I've just heard that others have had bad luck with them. My dad had one in the front axle of his '72 Chevy plow truck and it broke while plowing 3 feet of snow. However, he also has one in the axle of his 700 horsepower blown Nova and it hasn't broke yet!

Paid for it and drove it home tonight. Check engine light came on, went away when i stopped for gas then came back on about 45 minutes later. Still happy with it for the price. I'll start a build up thread beginning with the tune up and repairs. Thanks again everyone.

 

Good choice with the 22RE, I don't think you will be disappointed. They are really easy to learn to work on. How do you like the auto trans? How much did it set you back if you don't mind me asking?

 

The trans couldn't decide what gear it wanted to be in while driving on the highway home at 65mph, but i suspect that little quirk will go away once everything is back in good condition. I ended up paying $2300 cash.

 

Nice, looks like a good find. And Pruney is definantly spot on about the 22RE being a good engine to work with for a newbie. It's what I learned and am learning on. It's a solidly built engine and is about as simple as they get.

my check engine light comes on too. and i check the temp,oil,charge,and gas guage and keep on driving lol!! happy wheelling.
