EFI to carb swap on 85 pickup
Okay, so to start out I am wanting to swap my motor from my 86 4runner which is a 22re into an 85 pickup that I found for $300 with solid front axle and good tranny (my tranny in 4runner is about toast) but the engine In 85 was overheated bad so they think the head is screwed. Well I don't really feel to exited to swap all of the electronics over to the 85 for my efi so I was wondering should the intake from the 22r bolt right up? If so how much trouble am I looking at or should it be a fairly simple procedure? I apologize if I have looked over similar posts but I wasn't seeing anything so I decided I'd make my own. If anyone has any little bit of info they'd like to throw on thanks in advance it's greatly appreciated!

I think it would be more involved than you are thinking.
1. Wiring - you're going to have to rewire a lot of sensors and the entire engine harness, or replace all of it with the ones from the 85. Carbed engines don't need or have the same sensors as an EFI engine.
2. ECU - your old ECU might have issues as well. Even if you use the carbed wiring/ECU, there's no guarantee that it'll bolt up exactly right.

Are you going from Auto to Auto or are they different, ie. Auto to Manual or visa-versa?
The EFI engine will need the wiring from the EFI frame for sure then as well as the ECU. I've not heard of someone going from carbed to EFI before, so you might run into issues along the way that none of us have experience with.

I've always been told its as simple as swapping the intakes. I would imagine that the plugs and sensors from the 22R harness would plug into the 22RE block (seeing as they share the same block from 84-the end the of the 22 series). The only problem I foresee is you will need to add an electric fuel pump because the 22re will not have mechanical pump.
Edit: swapping from carb to EFI and EFI to carb seems to be pretty common down here, but I've never personally done it.

It's going 5 speed to 5 speed. The way things are sounding now the motor already in the pickup may just need a little head work if any work at all once I get the full story out of the guy... Thanks guys!
