i understand that there is a difference in deck height between these 2 gens of 22r... are the oil dipsticks the same length? exactly the same? interchangeable?

Depends on what you have I have seen different tube lengths as wheel as dipstick lengths .

If you are swapping dipsticks do it right after you change oil once you start the engine and fill the filter .

Then you will know you have 5 quarts and where the stick reads
