doubling the transfer case

First time user. Long time 4-runner owner.

I'm considering doubling the transfer case in my 4-cyl 87 4runner. I do some desert driving where extra low gears would come in handy, but I'm no rock crawler and all my off-roading begins with lots of pavement. What will this conversion do to my on-road handing.

and what will my new gearing be? Will I really have 5x2x2=20 gears or will I only exploit sequentially lower ratios between the first and second T-case.

Assumeing when you say doubling t-case you mean dual 2.28 t-cases or do you mean 4.70 in a single?

I started with the 4.70 but now have dual tcase 2.28 and 4.70, very low gearing and works awesome.

There is alot more things to do for dual t-cases and the overall price is far greater. On road you won't be able to tell if set up correctly.

You need to do alot of research before starting the install as the online and printed instruction don't go into depth of what all you need to do. ie: drivelines, pinion rotation, cv driveshaft rear, clearancing, possibly motor mounts (depends on gears)....

Start with marlins tech section, afterall he invented it.

Thanks

Yes, I plan on putting two whole transfer cases together with an adapter from Trail Gear Inc. I figured the hard (important) part will to change my drive shaft lengths (shorter rear/longer front). I'll have a local shop make that modification and do the installation myself.

What was that you said about CV joints? I was planing on using the original U-joints for both shafts. Bad Idea?

Having never driven a set up like this I mostly wanted to know it drove on the road OK. Sounds like yes.

You need to do more research. If it is set up correctly it will run fine at highway speeds. If it is not set up correctly you will get terrible vibrations.

Check out 4crawlers site Driveline 101 it should help.
