Dismounting Tires

For those of you who have taken wheels and tires to be dismounted...how much did it cost ou? I figured it would be pennies, if not free, but calling a local place today and getting quoted $40 per tire changed my idea. thanks!

im not sure becuase ive only had it done when gettin new tires..........why dont you do it yourself.....just let the air out and if use some thing that wont move for leverage(we used the back of a 1ton chevy) and use a bar jack and break the bead loose then rotate and break that side loose flip it and that side should be loose by stepping on it then use 2 crow bars to pry it off

Discount tire does it for like 10 bucks a wheel I think. It depends on what size and everything, but it might be less than that. I don't know I just know its no where near $40 each.

$109 is stupid high. $10-12 per tire unless they have got some new ultimate tire balancing machine...

My dad owns a tire shop here and I think he only charges like $15. So, I would have to say that you may want to call some other places and find a better deal Good luck to ya

The only way you're going to get it done for free is if you do it yourself. Shops are stingy these days.

Come on guys! Why should a shop do it for free? We have to buy equipment and pay someone to do it..
BTW, we only charge $5.00 per tire unless they are uber-large tires or low pros.

Yes shops have to buy equipment, pay someone to do it and yada yada but I've been told $80 for mount and balance of loose tires on rims with no tires. How do they justify $80 for 20 mins work MAXIMUM is my question

I had bought new Goodyear MTR'S last fall, I didn't want to install them until this spring so I waited for the snow tire change over rush.

In Washington, studded snows have to be off by April 1st. I called around to compare prices, Les Schwab was an average price $42.50 for 4 mount/balance, and they weren't backed up so I went there.

Just a simple dismount/mount, and balance. Took them about 20 minutes to swap on all 4 MTR"s. They pranced out to the counter and told me it was going to run $96.00 and some change.

Excuse me I replied you quoted $42.50 on the phone, what's up?

The guy told me the $42.50 price was for their line of tires, these being Goodyear, came to the $96.00 price. The reason being is that if they should happen to tear a bead on the tires while mounting them, they would have to run out a purchase a new one.

I said well the 4Runner is sitting there, all 4 tires seem to be holding air, hence no ripped bead.

The guy just said OK I'll give you the $42.50 price but only this one time.

I can see their point but, $96.00 to mount/balance 4 friggen tires?
Kinda steep for whats involved.

20 Minutes of work on a $8000 tire changer and a $12,000 tire balancer.

Sears Auto charges $40 for their "performance" balance per tire (if you buy tires from them, make sure they don't hit you with this as the install charge per tire).

Then I think it was $15 a tire for basic. Either way, it is ridiculous - and that is why I no longer work there.
