I have an 88 Toyota with a 22re that was rebuilt about 10k miles ago. As I was driving down the road it started missing really bad(gave no warning of a tap or knock etc.) I got it home and ran a compression test and the #4 cylinder is dead(60 psi). There is Fuel smoke coming out of exhaust.but the spark plug looks like it is burning fine has plenty of fire and obviously is getting fuel cause it burns my eyes it's running so rich. It's not backfiring or sucking air back through exhaust which makes me think it has nothing to do with the valves. Iam about to take the motor out of the truck and start tearing it down. What should I start looking for? I'm thinking it's probably a compression ring
[QUOTE=fierohink;52331174]Did you do a wet compression test?
Pull the valve cover and rotate the motor to see if your valve train is tracking appropriately.
I would try to narrow things down before you pull the motor.
I did not do a wet compression test however I did pull off valve cover and everything looks fine.. I may just pull the head first before taking the whole thing out
ok guys finally got time to pull down my motor last night and discovered a blown head gasket. But I'm kinda confused on my timing. I have my motor top dead on compression stroke, the mark on the cam gear is at the 12 o'clock position BUT the mark on my crank is at the 3 o clock position. I rotated the motor several times before pulling it down to double check myself and ended up the same each time. Any ideas? Thanks
It's possible your timing chain has enough slop in it that it has jumped time. Or the drift key sheared in the crank allowing the pulley to wander.
ok quick question just I pulled out a spark plug in my head and stripped the threads I put a helicoil in it. I don't really trust it and I was looking at buying a complete head with valves camshaft etc. would it be okay to use the same rocker arm assembly or should I buy that new too?
Most of the new heads you get come complete with cables and can but you reuse you old rocker arms. Engnbldr is a great source for quality parts and great heads, cam, valves all set up with free shipping.
I have bought an empty head and a dressed head from engnblr. The empty head was due to A crack between valves and I reused my internals. The dressed head was when I jumped to oversized stainless valves.
Both times I was happy with the service and product. Plus you can't go wrong with the pep from the Torkr cam.
As long as the pads that ride the cam lobes are shiny and don't have wear spots I would reuse them. Even if you have a bad rocker, you can take the assembly apart and replace individual components. I think single rockers are like $5 a piece.
