Here is a link to a Toyota Factory Service Manual for an 85. Should be pretty close. I dont have a carbed one...but this manual will have all you need.
Download file and unzip...I checked it...its a clean file and works.

The 22R models do not have any codes to trip. These are purely analog (mechanical) fueling systems.
Correct, for the same reason as stated above.
In stock form, there is no fuel filter in the tank. The OEM fuel filter is located next to the gas tank, inside the wheel well that the fuel filler neck is located.
Replacing the fuel filter is part of the regular maintenance, so that would be a good idea. Check to see what you fuel level is in the carburetor sight glass. The fuel level is supposed to be in the middle.

I have to quote myself for a little clarification.
There is a fuel screen in the tank for larger particles, but not a fuel filter.
Back on topic, one time I also have the engine stumble at freeway speeds. It ended up being the ignition wires. So the wires, distributor cap & rotor were all replaced. Also another regular maintenance procedure.
So check for the fuel filter to see if it is very dirty. Check to see where the fuel level in the carb. And if you have not done a tune-up recently, do that too.

My '84 22R fuel filter was accessible from the right rear wheel well. There is a small plastic cover that is held on by snap in retainers (Christmas trees) and a spring loaded clamp on each end of the filter. The filter itself is just held in by a large spring loaded wrap-around type retainer. Easily a 2minute job. Check there in addition to the one you found on your firewall.
