compression test ?
is it possible to do a compression test on a 22re that will not crank. I tried it on my 4 runner with the starter and the gauge read 180 psi. I then tried to turn the engine over with a ratchet on the crank and it only read 30 psi. the reason I am wondering is that my sons truck has slung a rod. I have found an engine that the po said was running good when he wrecked the truck. he has sold parts off the engine and you can't crank it. I was wanting to run a compression test on it.

You cannot just use a ratchet. Since there is some valve overlap in just about any engine, it has to spin fast enough to overcome that. With a ratchet, it the valve overlap gap is just too great and you will never get good compression.

thats what I thought. is there any other ways to check the engine to see if there could be something wrong with it? I know check the oil for water and water for oil, but other than that. looks like it is just a crap shoot. I would go ahead an change the timing chain and cover while it was out, just not sure what else to do to it.
