clutch question?

clutch question?
I recently replaced the master cylinder, the slave and the throw out bearing, after bleeding it with a vacuum pump three times I still have to double pump the clutch, once to neutral then once get to the next gear. Stumped....what am I doing wrong? And how do I fix it? Everyday driving or rock crawling this could be bad.

You make a very good point
I have been really busy getting reverse and brake lights working so I haven't done it yet, but the other day I was looking at the clutch pedal noticing that it wasn't positioned like it was before as far as the distance of travel in the pedal. I wondered if that would make the difference or not, and that is why I posted this. Forgive my ignorance on the matter but this was my first clutch repair just wasn't sure if it would help.

If the problem is not in your adjustment.
It is possible you might have a poor connection allowing air to be drawn into the clutch hydraulic system .
It does not take much to draw air in fluid loss would be so very little all most impossible to see

Perfect time to work on that clutch less shifting! I would guess either slave or master cylinder. The master cylinder might have been faulty (the one you bought). If it is a refurbished one, things don't always seal up tight.

If your pedal is in the wrong place. It could be out of adjustment. But make sure you look for clutch bracket fatigue. After 20 + years some of the clutch pedal mounting brackets have been known to crack. Slowly at first making you thing your clutch is going out. Then eventually cracking all the way leaving little to no clutch travel. Just another thing to look at. You should be able to take a really good look at it while you adjust your clutch pedal.
Hope this helps

pedal and master
I did check for fatigue and found that it was a new bracket, I am going to adjust out the pedal today to make sure that it has enough travel. As far as the connections go thankfully there is only two. But what I noticed also yesterday is under the fluid cup on the master there appears to be a tiny leak. I don't know if the cup is threaded into the master but I will check it. I thought maybe I put to much fluid in the reservoir and it leaked out around the top but the rest of the reservoir is dry. Its just a tiny amount but as someone mentioned it might be where the air leak is. I can't tear it down for a little bit because she has brake and smog appointments but I will do the adjustments and check for air leaks today.

i can`t see how that can be related to the clutch in any way.
Spray the linkage with your penetrating spray of choice.
If that does not help if this is Fuel Injected the throttle bodies do tend sometimes to get a build up that lets the valve hang up.
One of the things when one buys a very neglected Truck.
Seems like one thing after another till it is back to being maintained like it needs to be.

It only happens when...
It only happens when I press the clutch, when I am out on the road she doesn't do it. Short distance shifting seems to set her off??? In town driving she doesn't like it, but it is something that seems to be getting better not worse. I don't know what to think of it, its just disturbing.
I just cleaned the throttle body and EFI intake. It was really bad, almost an inch thick inside I really don't understand how she breathed at all....she had asthma the inhalers weren't working. I have a K&N air filter I am going to pull it off and clean it to see if that makes a difference.

Faulty master cylinder for clutch
Found a problem with the new master cylinder...leaking for sure from the reservoir cup. My clutch shifts fine, only the surging thing. I don't know if the two are related but it came at a bad time. I have to make a 100 mile trip to the smog referee and hope that it holds up. Funny thing is the fluid level looks the same. Hoping its overfilled and coming out the top. I will take my gallon of fluid with me to make sure it stays full until I get back. Don't know what else to do!

Whats it do on a downhill (i.e. without motor having to pull truck)? If you take foot off gas, engine decel should kick in...or do you accelerate?
Whats it do if you do a clutchless shift to neutral? If it doesn't rev up after the shift, push in the clutch. I'd be stunned if it would rev up.

Pedal adjustment did the trick she is shifting like the old days.
