Cleaning throttle body on V6

I read on one of the threads that cleaning the throttle body will help the fuel mileage. Is the throttle body removed to do this or can you just take off the air cleaner.

Any info on this would be great.

Thanks.

Jack

What motor - taking off the air cleaner on a 3.0 won't get you close. You need to clean it through the throttle plate but the motor will die when you pull off the tubing. Another way is Seafoam through a vacuum line. Search for the tread on this.

To really get at it, you would probably have to remove the throttle body, which is not that hard. Removing the almost hidden coolant lines underneath is probably the most difficult step.

You could just remove the intake and peak inside to see how dirty the throttle body is. You might find it doesn't need much work.

Be careful which cleaner you use... can effect the TPS in a bad way I have heard.

Just did this since I had to take off the throttle body to adjust my TPS, and to clean out the whole thing you definitely need to take it off.

I've also heard that is is smart to take off the TPS before you clean it, but after inspecting everything close up with the TB off, I can't see how any cleaning solvent can get into the TPS from the TB.

THere's a Tech Writeups section here on YT... and there's a lot of info in it. Here's a piece:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f128/throttle-body-cleaning-3rd-gen-4runner-76368/

Even if you don't have a 3.4L, that should tell you more.

There's a Search button here on YT, and there's a lot of info behind it:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123/seafoam-verdict-69490/
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123/seafoam-injector-intake-cleaner-good-stuff-64836/

Those should help with both of your questions.. But in short, "Yes", and "an autoparts store".

seafoam definately works! did wonders for my 3.0! idle is smoother. just follow directions on the can. i poured mine through the PCV valve hose so it would go to the TB. and i also put a can with a full tank of gas. theres a lot of info on sea foam if you use the search button up top...

to clean the throttle body you only need to remove the intake hose at the TB itself. easy.
