center handle tailgates

mine has a center handle, but my friends (also an 82) has the style with two handles, one on each side. When did toyota begin using the center handles? Or were they only on the sr5's?

The one with the center handle is a bed made in USA. The other is from japan. Yes, some arrived at the port without beds for tax reasons. It was cheaper.

and i would wayyy rather have the two-latch gate if I designed my truck. then again, mines a 94, i don't know if they were still using them then.

but i love that. it's got that nice "i use my truck for more than commuting" look.

Interesting. I do like the two-handle style, but at the same time think the center handle is nicer for a lot of loading/unloading.

Thanks for the info
