someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if freon gets too low in the system, i think a low pressure sensor kicks in and keeps any further damage occurring to the A/C system--maybe you are low on freon?

thanks for the info i know that there are some fuses on the drivers side by my leg i assume that is the only fuse box but we all know what happens when we assume. this is an 86 if that makes a difference as for the freon being low ill have to check that out. can this be done by checking the charge on it i have no idea?
thanks

yea--if you can afford a professional, he/she can put gauges on it and correctly check pressures, then vacuum it down, check for leaks, and recharge it with the proper amount of oil and coolant. Me, I just bought one of those 35.00 recharge/retro kits and used it's dummy gauge to refill my '91... It worked like a charm for me, but I'm not sayin it was the right way, either!

You are correct, there should be a low pressure cut-out switch. It is usually near the dryer, but not always. If there isnt enough pressure in the system, it will prevent the compressor from kicking on. Additionally, if the switch is bad, it will prevent the compressor from kicking on as well, even if you have enough refridgerant.
