Build your own bumper starters: ideas/pointers needed
So I've been thinking more and more about building a rear bumper with a tire carrier in the next 6 months or so and I had a few questions. First off let me say I've read so many awesome threads about bumper construction. I've seen a few people post pictures of bumpers they've designed in some CAD software (none for the 3rd gen though). Is there a general consensus on a good program to use. I downloaded Google Sketchup (free!) and started playing with it but nothing awesome yet. Has anyone got tips for designing/building a bumper that would save me a headache down the road? Also from other people's first hand experience, which do you think is easier to start off with, front or rear bumper?

I am a newbie to the forums. I do however have a little experience when it comes to fabing. I would suggest that you start with the rear(depending on your abilities). It has less angles to deal with and it could give you some insight on how the front should go. I would also suggest that you place a couple of shackle mounts for recovery on both sides. I would also re-enforce the end caps of the frame.

this is from treknwil's FJ thread:
cardboard mock up saves some mistakes and is easier to cut than steel:

Well I haven't added much to my FJ in some time. I've been concentrating on my 87 4runner. But know its time to turn my attention to the FJ. I've been wanting a new front bumper forever. So here it is,

The center section is a brush gaurd off a late 90's Suburban, that I got off of Craigslist.
The wings are 1/8" plate steel.

The bars are .120 DOM tubing.
The mounting are via 1/4" angle iron 4" wide.

I have yet to install the Superwinch I have. That will come soon.
Here are some more pics!!!!
