Brake Drum

Stupid, yes. But I haven't owned a Toyota long enough to figure this out (I'm a Chevy truck guy slowly learning the ways of the 'yota).

But how do I pull the brake drums? On my old Chevy I'd just hit it with a sledge and it would come off?

It is an '86 Toyota 4x4 (yeah, I know IFS....)

~Thanks

Same way.

I find tapping it around the circumference (not just on one side or the other) helps.

If your brake shoes are out, it will make it harder to come off. I just had to use a torch to heat up one drum on my truck to get it off. Damn rust

I try to loosen the adjuster for the shoes it takes a brake tool and a very small screwdriver to hold the tension spring back from the adjuster.
then once I have loosened it up I use two bolts hardened steel can't remember what width size bolt think it was 10mm,
but bolts are cheap so might want to buy a assortment of mm sized bolts at least 3 1/2 inch long thread in the 2 bolts in the threaded holes very slowly and it will push the drum off of the axle and this way you don't bang the crap out of you dust guard.

the biggest problem I have seen is the shoe makes a lip in the drum,
when pulling the drum it catches on the brake shoes

Use 2 M8-1.25x50 mm bolts in the two small threaded holes in the drum to pull them off. Lubricate the threads well (anti-sieze or grease) and then turn alternately maybe 1/2 turn each to pull the drum off level. Make sure the adjuster is backed off all the way.

and when you put them back on make sure to put some anti seize where the drum meets the hub that way it wont rust up and be a pain to remove at a later date
