Better Mpg's

my 80' Toyota 4x4 has alright mpg's just driving around town or on the highway....but as soon as i start muddin it seems as though i lose A BUNCH of mpg's...i know that it is muddin....but i dont think i should be using that much gas....i have no air filter....i was wondering...if i got a filter...would that help my mileage...what about a carb rebuild...please help with this....this truck is draining my wallet faster than i can say toyota.....ANY info helps...thanks...(i know this isnt the best way to ask this but o well)

My dad's, w/ a leaky carb get's about 12mpg. It sits most of the time, hell it's only got 63K on it. As far as wheeling. In my truck, I average 15-17 on the street, but once I start wheeling, it'll drop to 12-13mpg...

It just sort of happens. Lot's of throttle, in low gear for a long time drinks uo the gas.

running no air filter and mudding is probably one of the dumbest things ive heard an air filter is 5 dollars top at the local auto parts store just drop one in and see

i know its the stupidest thing to do...but i have no air filter box...or anything...i've been trying to come up with a solution to that too...but havent found one yet
