bent axle. Which rear ends are interchangable 86 4x4 pickup
#21
I found one. Whole assembly from the axle to the drums. Going to throw it in and road test it. If it leaks, I'll deal with it then. I have a friend with presses and everything that builds transmissions for a living. Went to O'riley and got the axle seal today for like...6 bucks. Priced bearings and they were 44 or something like that. I'm going to just toss it in and hope its ok. If not I'll take it out to my friends place and do the bearings and seal then. I just hope that I"m not buying another bent one but oh well... Life is full of risks...
4Crawler sent me a good shade tree bearing replacement link posted above. Looks like a 5 on the 1 to 10 scale of difficulty for me and probably a 2 for my friend that builds transmissions.
I appreciate all the input from everyone that has given replys to this thread. I figured I was in deep ca-ca when I started this thread. Now I know that I can get it fixed. Easy like. Well, a lot easier than expected.
I just bought this truck. This is my 1st journey into Toyota territory. Have had an FJ40 before a long time ago and didnt have to do anything to it. That thing was tougher than a bag of hammers. I've always had bronco's and blazers and the such...then a friend came out to my ranch and wanted to drive into the bottoms. I was all " Man dont do it..." He goes. "Its a Toyota...I wont get stuck" and I'll be dipped if he didnt. So right then I decided to get one. I was hamstrung because of my Lab, who goes everywhere with me and I didnt like the tiny back seats that were available. I have been looking for one of these custom cabs for a long time and when I saw this one with NO RUST on it I just basically bought it on the spot. I feel secure that I made the correct decision. I plan on keeping this truck until one of 3 things happen. 1. Some idiot wrecks into me and totals it. 2. It rusts away into nothing, which I dont think will happen. 3. I die...
I cant wait to get my winch on it. I'm going to fabricate up a land anchor, simply because I think I can build one out of scrap that is better than one I can buy. My ranch is a bad bad place in the winters so I'm planning on going heavy with the recovery equiptment. Already have 2 bumper jacks. Bunch of chain. Bought the winch. Going to set it up to go on the front or the back... So IF I get stuck, I wont be long. Want to leave it fairly stock cause I plan to DD it. Plan on some skid plates tho incase I high side it. Oh and axle breathers incase I get into some water.
Woah. Didnt plan to get all long winded here....
Thanks again.

Extending your diff breathers needs to be done early, or it gets expensive. Water + oil don't lubricate so good.
Do some research on lockers - no other mod will enhance the offroad capability as much

I agree, and I agree. I had a locker when I had a H2. It was an amazing truck, but heavy. I would like a locker, but it would have to be selectable and I have not researched how hard it would be to install, and what kind and how much it would cost.
I've been trolling the forum a little bit looking at the locker information....but right now I have bent axle on the brain.

a selectable locker is going to be spendy and not something I would recommend doing by yourself. hope the rear end works out for you. sounds like most every one on here has got you in the right direction.

After doing some research, a lunch box one will probably be what I have to do. Yes, I think that everyone gave me the best of advice on the axle. Most everyone here knows a bunch more about these rigs than I do, and I've always been one to listen to someone that knows more than me on a subject.

Both my diffs are welded and the only problem I have with it is turning sharp with the hubs locked in. On the street its just like having a spool in the rear. the front end isnt a problem unless the hubs are locked in of course.

Well,
Axle is in. Rides better, much better however I still have vibration which I attribute to the carrier bearing, which is on order and the idler arm, which needs replaced.
It took about 30 minutes, as you all advised me, to get it in (not including bleeding the breaks.)
Thanks for all the help.

I put the axle in Sunday and it was a, as 4crawler stated a trivial fix. The old one was out and the new one was in in about 20 minutes. Bleeding the breaks took the longest amount of time.
Thanks everyone for the help.
I'm so used to working on cars that seem to be designed by a U-boat commander, that I am impressed as to how easy this truck has been to work on so far.
Anyway, thanks everyone for all the input. I'm learning about the little Yota as I go so bear with me....

i have a 1980 toyota pickup 4x4 and the back driver axle shaft broke off and was wondering if a 1987 toyota pickup/suv 2 or 4 wheel drive will work with it i took it out and it is a 30 spine axle

Entire axle housing and shafts would swap over. The '87/4WD has the ~3" wider rear axle and larger brakes, so is a good upgrade. The shafts are too long and the 2WD is a 5-lug, so would not work.
#34
I actually have two off my '85. Brake shoes are pretty much gone and I think at least the driver's side wheel bearing is about gone, but that all can be replaced.
#36
Yes, probably take $25 for one or $40 for both. Would need a shipping zip code for a shipping cost. Also whether you need the brake drums or not (they are in decent shape but are fairly heavy so would add to the shipping cost).
