belt/pulley tensioner bolt question

ran into a problem today, 85 22re. im trying to remove my belt, but what i beleive is the tensioner bolt, is just backing out and not releasing any tension on the belt. do i take the bolt completly, or even further out?

the pulley is probably not moving/sliding inside the bracket like it's supposed to. I had that problem on mine when I did the manual to power steering swap onto mine.

On the back of that pulley you will see a square or similar shaped block that that bolt threads to.

Come to think of it, I don't remember my bolt threading out that far either, the head should stay somewhat close to the bracket.

oops forgot to mention how I fixed it. Can you say BFH?

I'd take the nut off the pulley before banging on it.

it should only need slight taps on the pulley. I wouldn't hit the bolt though cus you might actually damage the threads on it even though your hitting the head. If you can get something in there to pry it that would work too.

if you take the nut off the pulley the pulley will fall off the tensioner if you hit it. Unless you mean thread the bolt all the way out. But then again, that will solve the tight belt issue. hahaha.

another thing to try is to loosen up the alternator bolts and pry that back and use the belt as your leverage on the pulley, if that makes sense. Kinda like how you would tighten the alternator if you didn't have power steering.

wait a minute scratch that. that won't work it's a different belt. doh!!!!! I've been on here too long today haha. That's got to one of the stupider things I have said on here. ROFL.

^^^THIS!

The pulley's are clamped on... You tighten the adjuster down 1st, then tighten the jam bolt on the outside of the pulley.

To disassemble, do it in reverse order.

Yeah, the pulley's are a new thing if you're not used to them.

It's common for someone to break the adjuster bolt trying to loosen a pulley b/c you stare at it going "WTF?" not having any idea the forces it holds.

It looks like it hold the pulley on, not adjusts it

That, and dirt and grime can cause it to bind, hence the "hit it" posts.

While that is true, you better make sure the jam bolt is loose 1st... Or you can bend the adjuster bolt.

you mean to tell me this whole time I have had my power steering on I was supposed to tighten down on that bolt?

I guess I skipped the power steering section in my FSM.

Jam nut is in the center of the pulley, the tension bolt is the one that you have cracked nearly all the way out.

That's if I am not being stupid again and mis read tried's post.

I guess I got something to check on my truck tomorrow haha. Surprised my pulley isn't making noises because it's "loose"
