Bar's Leaks
Does this stuff work, or is it all hype?
I have a leak, can't tell from where. Drips down from somewhere above the front right shock, on to said shock, then on to the floor. I had posted a while back about it possibly being the power steering pressure hose (mech's opinion a few months ago), but my power steering fluid level hasn't changed. Plus, it looks and tastes like reg. motor oil.
It isn't a huge leak, 'cause I seldom have to add oil to the engine between changes. I does drop a bit, but maybe only 1/4 quart. Some of that suppose could be burning off as well. But leaks do not get better by themselves, so...
Just wondering if any of those additives work on older engines.
Got 166,500 on the '91 4Runner (I think I can get a collector plate next year!).
Thanks!

It gums up everything including stuff it's not supposed to. Find the leak and fix it right.

It is at the mechanic now. He said that even if he does find it, it might not be worth fixing, considering I seldom add oil between oil changes. I only put about 5k-6k on it a year (my daily driver). Other than the mpg (and saggy rear end, rear passenger power windows not working, and "some" rust), I like the thing.
I forgot to ask the mech what he thought of the additives, although I can guess what his reply will be.
Thanks for the replies.

dont use them i just pulled a part a motor and the thermo housing had gelitan clogging it from a water leak stopper....its a mess. The lucas oil additive is good its like pouring honey in the motor lol. I have used it many times its not listed as a leak stoppere just a really thick additive that will help plump up seals.

For what it`s worth I have a 1983 Celica 22REC that when I got it had some slight oil leaks and burned some also.
Using Lucas oil additive it quit leaking and burning oil by the 3rd oil change in the roll of daily driver.
I also mix this with the gear oil also

Could be your cam seals, when was the last time your timing belt was changed out?
Also, is there any gunk on the front of your motor? Does it only leak when it's cold? And, there's not such thing as "not being worth fixing." Eventually, whatever it is could cause a catastrophic failure and leave you stranded somewhere, not to mention the small but unnessescary impact on the enviroment. If it's leaking and your mechanic says you shouldn't bother, find a different mechanic or do it yourself. Do it right the first time and you'll avoid more headaches down the road.

I asked him about the oil additive stuff for leaks, and he said he has never used the stuff, just fixed the problem.
I suppose I could take it to a dealer...
I am sure they would spot the problem. Thanks for all the input.

seriously if you're only loosing a little oil between changes just get the lucas oil stuff. it doesn't hurt any thing and most likely stop the leak. It reconditions seals and make your motor happy. You have very little to nothing to loose with it.
this stuff. Will not hurt your motor just read the instructions and use it next oil change.

Live in NW Minnesota....
BTW, the mech I took it to wasn't looking for extra work, as he said he wouldn't do the stated engine pull.
I wonder how I can add some of that stuff now...I'll read up on the Lucas stuff.
Thanks

What about changing the oil to a high mileage oil and then adding the Lucas?
