another newbie with issues

Hey Y'all,
I am not completely new to Toyota's in general but this is my first "real" toyota. It is an 85 but the motor is from an 86 4runner from what the owner said. It was an automatic and was converted to stick and it looks like it was done well too. It has a full length header with no cat and it is running on 33's with a 4in lift I beleive.
Anyways my real issue is that it is a pain to start cold as if she is a carb'd motor.Once it cranks its fine but he motor is noisy after it gets hot. And I noticed that as long as there is a load against it it's pretty quiet but between shifts sounds like maybe rods chattering. I know that these motors aren't exactly quiet but I was told by a neighbor that the timing cahins can make a lot of racket too, which I am hoping would explain the real lack of power. It doesn't burn or leak anything so I am looking for a little guidance. Oh and occasionally the check engine light will come on and stay on for a little bit while I run it in 4th but when I shift to 5th it'll go ut and the cycle will continue randomly.

Help! ........thanks

Welcome to yotatech. Search for these categories and your answers will be found. Gears and tires, Valve lash settings, Injector ticking, trouble codes and how to pull then via the paper clip, and other similar problems and you shall see. Start there and come back.

After I adjusted the valves she sounds better, but at about 2300rpm you can hear a definite knock or rattle from below. I plan on dropping the oil pan tomorrow morning and maybe sliding some new rod bearings in it.Anybody else done this or have any advice? The motor was supposedly rebuilt and I'm wondering if something wasn't torqued since it so clean(inside the motor)

Rod bearings were definitely worn out on 3 out of the 4. I replaced them now I'm just waiting to see if she"ll start. Optima batteries dont seem to charge quick at all...and she is turning over slow.
