Am I in trouble: 1983 frame repair

can this be fixed to be safe? the other side apparently was fixed before. My son and his buddy were jumping the mx track with this like this and we didnt know. it still drives ok too. funny . Toyotas are the best. this is a 1983 toyota pickup, mechanicly runs great. he is 16 in two months and we want him driving it only if its safe. can we get it welded with some new steel?is it legal?

It can be done if you can weld or have a friend that welds. The welding is the easy part it is the prep work that makes it time consuming

Depending on where you live it might be hard to find someone that will do it.If then it will get expensive

If it runs good it won`t hurt to check the rest of the frame at this time.

Good luck

owww my forehead can't see much. Get a photobucket account and put something up everyone can see. But by the sounds of the other guys with better eye sight them myself, I got lucky in that I was able to reuse my hangers but here is my frame both sides had to be repaired. Been holding strong for over two years now. The guy who did it is a welder in the same leaf spring shop for at least 30 years. I believe used 3/16 plate for the repair. You may or may not need to drop the fuel tank to do it. He was able to do it without dropping my tank.

That is a lot more than just ordering a new spring mount from trail gear

Gonna need to fix / fish plate a huge crucial area of the frame.
If one side is like that, take a close look at the opposite.
It is repairable but might as well pull the bed/tank etc so you can do the repair correctly.

Red face

Like I said the welding is the easy part!!

It is all the prep work getting it ready !!

If you need to remove the gas tank the fact this should be a 22R meaning no pump in the tank makes it a little easier but your still dealing with old brittle fuel lines that like to crack where they come up out of the tank.

Yes it is much easier to do this work with the tank out and bed off but just where do you draw the line .

It comes down to if you need to pay someone this could get quite expensive now if you had this truck since new and it has value that way.

Then again boys will be boys for the most part. What will break next?? If you use it hard things will need to be fixed.

All bets are off as to how much money I have seen people willing to spend.

It all comes down to the budget

Both sides cost me $350 total to have done. IMO was cheap. But like I said the guy was able to do it without removing my tank or the bed which I still had the original one at the time on it.

I got a spot now above the rear bump stop on one side of the frame rail that needs to be fixed.

Man that frame repair job looks awesome... I wish I had job like that done to my truck, tried to save some pennies and went to an underqualified shop and simply they did nothing near close to what I wanted. cr5oo If you really want to keep the truck (I know I would) Spend the money on a good frame job from a place where they have expierience and knowledge on Restorations and 4x4 if possible. The frame is the foundation of your truck! I know I learned the hard way

I've fixed a few in the past, I made a pattern and had a shop cut a bunch of "fish plates" that go from shock mount cross member to the cross member behind cab. They charge by the hour to cut on CNC, so I got a bunch done. They won't go stale and next time I need one, I already have it! I take the bed and tank off to do the repair. It makes a crappy job ALOT easier!
