How does that do drifting wise? in dirt i mean.. I was just looking at weight of 4 runners and tacos…. dude the 4 runners are heavy as sin…. you catch a rear tire and your gonna be coin' a California sushi roll all the way down the trail!

Somebody put some money and time in that Runner
I'd say that rig leans a little away from the daily driver aspect and is more purpose oriented
Well oreopenguin536....let's see how many pictures, pages, and views your thread will get in the near future. Be sure to post some pics of your own sas project rig too.

Alright, I think it goes without saying one of the biggest controversies out there is the ifs vs. SAS question. I have researched it all up (or as much as I could) but still couldn't think of a good answer… so pricing aside, which is better?
It will be my daily driver, hopefully a 1996+ 4 runner (3rd gen had locking diffs in rear from what I'm told), 4 runner because so far I've found the most stick shifts as compared to jeeps… I will be doing some light pre running (nothing 12-15 inches of travel couldn't handle) and some crawling. Basically a all around rig that can go fast, have decent street manners and go crawl as needed.
I know that cv axles and joints are weak, but I would like to upgrade them to the rvc cv's… I've heard and read a lot of stories of ifs doing just as good a job at crawling as solid axle and vise versa but I still want a second opinion from other people who have wheeled ifs…What do you guys think
*If the picture came up, that was of my old jeep, it would be stuff like that and a tad bit gnarlier*

I estimate it will run me 1000 by the time I get it rolling down the highway. Not bad at all.
It's good that I already have a FJ62 axle donor.

Other things tto think about......
suspension type?....Do I go with coil-overs and a cool 4 link with panhard rod set-up? Some money involved there.
Maybe use chuckwagon technology....leafpacks and shackle to the rear like so many others have done? I'll need a long travel driveshaft.....and I'll have to do a cut-out and move the IFS power steering box as far forward as possible if I do.
Maybe leafpacks and shackle to the front(my plan for me)? Not as popular to do for some vague reason.....but it seems to have its benefits. The stock DS can be used with it's low travel slip joint....the box does not have to be mounted all the forward on the frame rail. The bigger tires are less likely to ever contact the rear of the fenderwells due to the way the tire travels upward in a much "friendlier" arc.
And do you buy a high steer set-up or do you make your own basic cross-over where the tie-rod is under the leaf packs and the draglink is over like this.....

In the picture below, the draglink that passes over the packs is a beefy purchased part from http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/cgi...&category=1001 and
the lower tie-rod under the packs is OEM Toyota....with a 36" piece of Home Depot water pipe(cost $3.99 plus tax) welded over the thin Toyota tube.

Either a 4 door taco or a runner
I think I'm going ifs. ..I kinda like the prerunner thing..just make it a 4wd and upgrade the cv axles and get a nasty LT kit and call it a day for suspension
What's a good LT kit that's not as costly ad camburg

http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/p...roject174.html
Then said screw it and went full race with it....
And no it held its own well at speed....it cornered etc....eventually the top was gutted and clamshelled fiberglass....but gutted it didn't weigh squat....
Too many little dill holes building the front then leaving the rear stock....watch em porpoise the whoops etc...cracks me up.
Been building and running jeeps and Toyotas 18 + years.....
Here's my latest jeep I sold and bought a 97 4runner and a TRD supercharger to slap on then SAS....I do more crawling now but will have coilovers, links, hydraulic bumps etc.....
And yes I built the thing myself from head to tow bumpers front rear, cage , suspension etc.....

you can only get about 13 inches of travel though with 4wd unless you got some serious coin though. Or is that not true? How crazy is 13 inches anyway? Theirs now way that could do much of anything unless your just a weekend warrior hitting some mild dirt roads, or am I wrong?
My main fear is that I'll get something like that, lets say a 12 inch LT kit and go out and bust a nut because it couldn't handle what I was doing

12" travel front can do a lot more than you think if you have a good setup in the back.
Spring under axle with a bedsaver cage for shock hoops and 18" travel.
Tacoma world long travel section.
total chaos website look it up.

Leaf spring, under axle for the back.
I've got a T100 axle for mine to match the track width of the front kit and to get clearance for shocks outside the frame rails that will take up less bed space.
