Arrow Advanced Timing for 3VZE

I have an 89 4runner with a 3VZE. I have note some mentions of advanced timing. What is meant by that. Are timings simply being advanced past factory specifications. If so, whats the limits and will this cause engine damage?

Well, the limits of timing would be detonation, and detonation = engine damage. The timing should be set around idle at whatever the factory setpoint is, and the engine will automatically advance it as the rpm's increase. To advance the timing from the factory setting could offer some hp gains, but may lead to detonation, especially in the summer.
