96 Toyota 2.7
Just had a question about my 96 Tacoma. I have recently put a new head on and just finished buttoning it up. I fired it up for the first time and it revved up to about 3,000 and then dropped down to a normal idle 800 or so. Then it started spiting and sputtering then died. I checked the maf then the tps and after that I checked the egr and the thing right next to the egr that has the filter. None of which seems to be the problem with the rough idle (I actually bought new sencors and tryed them out). So then I began checking for a vacuum leak. I found a few cracked lines but nothing big. I replaced the bad lines and still rough idle. Then I proceeded to check for a mechanical error. I removed the head maid sure I was on tdc then put it back on ensuring that the cams were in time and then checked to make sure the distributor was correct. Put it back to gather and still the same problem. Does any one know where to start looking?

I think it might be the exhaust. I have installed a header and well it has never quite sealed yet.. It sounds like straight headers. Well i was sick of that so i got down there and added 4 gaskets to it and it sounded even worse than before and through up an engine code. (po300) multiple cylinder misfire. So at first i was pissed. And started looking to the fuel rail and what not. After i checked the injectors i decided to remove the 4 gaskets and put 2 back on and this time i spent 20 minutes lining it up and trying to get it on good. I started it up and it ran ok it still had an exhaust leak but it was not as bad as before and it ran good enough to drive, and didn't throw any engine codes. So i think if i can button up the exhaust good enough it should run.

Ok so the exhaust was part of the problem but not the solution. I kept on working on it last night and heard a leak between the injectors and the injector spacers. So I sprayed it with chemtool to see what would happen, and when I did it killed the motor. I have removed the throttle body and the fuel rail and began working on the spacers. I put a larger o-ring on them and then added a bit of RTV around the top lip of it to help seal them. I am letting the RTV dry and hopefully tonight it will be running properly.

Well... It runs!!!! I had to add an o-ring on the outside of the injector and lower the fuel rail just to get the injector to seal to the injector spacers. However it worked and it runs better than before. I will try to post some pictures of the project later next week.
