i just bought a 1995 toyota land cruiser at highway speed when i let off the gas theres a humming sound comming from the rear this is going to be a extra vehicle for only part time use so i wold like to do the work myself it has 161000 miles on it

 

No noise (or much less) when you're on the gas?

If so, sounds like Ujoint to me ...

 

I had that same noise on my 88 pickup and 95 4runner. Both times it was a simple u-joint replacement.
