95 3.0 4runner Gremlins
Hi All,
First time posting here, I recently bought a 95 4x4 V6 3.0 motor Auto tranny and 165k miles. First off I have no records or even a manual for this vehicle. When I test drove it and had it checked over everything seemed normal as could be.
This is not a daily driver, I am using it on photography trips to camp/sleep in and 4x4 trails that my daily driver cannot go on. I've put 2500 miles on 2 trips over the last 3 weeks.
I have a few concerns, not sure how big the gas tank is but my mileage is crap (15-16 maybe hwy) and i've tried to leave my lead foot at home. On to more important items, I've started hearing a whirly type noise coming from the shifter area when i accelerate hard or it downshifts going up a hill. The big thing tho is it takes approx 2-2.5miles for the transmission to go into overdrive. Is this normal for this old of a vehicle? I did not notice it when I test drove it so the prev owner probably drove it before I came over or since it was a warm day it didnt do it. Past week it's been in the 30's here.
Thanks
Kurt

A quick search here, perhaps before you purchased it, would have revealed that.
The tranny shifting sounds normal. The tranny will not shift into OD until it is warmed up.

Thanks Fred, I'm considering giving it a tune up but not sure what exactly to change out, I will do some searches and see what everyone has been recommending. I would love to try and get 20mpg am I dreaming? Also what do you think the whirly type noise could be?
