90 pickup Hood release issue
Hey, I have a 90 toyota pickup, 22re,4wd. My hood release cable is broken and I have new one, but cannot get hood to open, I have removed skid plate but still cannot gain access to release?? I have cable disengaged from lever inside cab, and have tried pulling on cable with pliers with no luck, any suggestions. Thanks

He stated that his cable was broken.....
Only thing I can think of is what you are probably attempting, get up to where it broke, latch on some vise grips to the broken cable, and pop it that way.

yeah, That's my plan, just can't see a way to get there from here, I thought dropping the skid plate would give me room, but no such luck, can't get to any of the grill bolts/screws to try and get that out of the way either. hate to screw the grill up but really don't see how to get to the lock to release, has anyone had this problem with broken hood release cable and hood locked down??

not sure where it's broken, I was able to pull the interior latch side out about 12 inches or so and then it stopped without releasing the hood lock, so it feels like it came off at the hood latch end, Luckily the truck runs awesome so at the moment no need to get under the hood, but it will need to get done soon. I was looking at aftermarket grills, and they are not that expensive, so if all else fails I'll just cut an access hole in the original grill to get the hood open and install new grill, rather not but at this point don't see another way.

Hey All, Finally had time to mess with hood, After mulling over how to get the hood latch lock to release with no success, I went with plan "B", which was to cut the middle of the grill out and remove the 3 hood latch bolts and was able to get the hood up with latch still attached. Then and only then was I able to gain access to the release lever that the cable connects to. The entire hood latch lock mechanisim is in a cup, so even with the grill cutout, I still had to remove the latch bolts to make it work, So after all that I installed new hood release cable, and yes I tested it several times before installing new grill. The repo grill was only $50 and it fit great with the only mod needed was to drill an extra hole for the "TOYOTA" emblem. So anway, Thanks for the help!!
