My son has a 88 4runner. He drove it from NC to kentucky. The muffler was shot. I put a new muffler on it at a local shop. as soon as we drove off it would barely move. Htere was no power at all. It also has a miss. Rpeplaces the plugs, wires, distrubutor and roter still misses . added 5 gallos of 93 octan gas and there was a noticable imporbment in power but isntead of 0-60 in 1 min it now takes about 30 secons. I have consdered knowing a hole in the muffler to see if that will help. any ideas> im ignorant here so any help will pe aprpecaited.

 

does it still have the catalytic converter? may be there. Other then air or fuel filter I'm not sure as you've replaced the usual suspects

 

the converter has been removed. im new to this site and leariing it as I go . I havent epalced the fuel filter but the air filter is in good shape. I was thinking fuel fileter or fuel pump. SInce i added the gas to it ( it was nearly empty) 5 gallos of gas and it showed a significant increase in power, but still will not even spin the titres even in gravel. I should add that there had been some work done to it prior to his comien g up here., I did take it to a mechenaci and hecheked the compresion on the cylinders and said there good. the spark plugs fire on 1, 3 and 5 but i can actually pull all 3 wires off and it still runs the same. wierd i know but its true. what give4ws?
