87 runner cant pass DEQ

I have an 87 runner with a 20r, Weber carb. I just put a heavy duty Magnaglow cat on it today and drove about 50 miles and tried to go through DEQ and failed. I then tried driving another 50 miles and tried again. I have failed twice today. I need to know what i should do to get her to pass. I have about 9 days left

Post up what the results of the 2 times you failed, they should have given you a certificate with where the readings are and where they should be at idle and at 2000 RPM's or something like that.

First time was HC 780/798 CO 3.7721/3.9003
Second test HC 646/686 CO 2.7756/2.8939
And the cat is legal in Oregon.

What are the acceptable limits?
How many miles since it's had a tune-up? Plugs, plug wires, air filter, PCV valve, etc? Have you taken a look under the hood for bad or disconnected vacuum hoses?

While not exactly your year and engine, the basics still apply on page 2:

For the HC its supposed to be 220 and the CO is supposed to be no more than 1. It has about another 2500 miles before it needs a tune up. As for the oil change, its about due. It has a major oil leak that just started two days ago, appears to be the valve cover gasket. Or rather where the gasket should be. Since the guy that i bought it from used RTV and no gasket. And the carb air filter has been cleaned a few weeks ago. It has new cap and wires, replaced them about 6 months ago. All hoses are accounted for and hooked up. Keep in mind there is no smog pump or anything.

ummm well you might need the stock emission stuff..
normally best to pass the smog test before you change the carb and muffler..

do you have the stock things to put back on just to get it to pass?

No i bought it like this. The truck is supposed have all the emission stuff and EFI and what not, but this isn't the motor that goes to this truck. So i think the specs would be different for a 22RE vs a 20R. I really don't know!

yea its a different engine.. is it possible to get it under a hotrod??
in my province "canada" if you put a bigger engine than what was available then you can get it plated hotrod with lax emissions rules... 1987 is also the cut off year for smog test here.. like my my 1982 never needed a test..

I wouldnt think they would run it when they look at it and see its a 22r and not a 20r they are ok with running a different engine than maybe you could find a friend with a similar truck and run it...

also make sure you run the truck really hot before you take it in..maybe someone else will chime in if those bottles of stuff at the parts store work

Well correct me if im wrong, but i believe a 20R is smaller than a 22RE.
The cut off here is 75. I wish it was 85.
They run it with the VIN number so i can't have someone else go for me unfortunately.
I was told they frown upon motor swaps so i didn't mention to them it has a different motor than what its supposed to have.
It was well heated up when i took it through.

So I think that you should try to retard the timing some, and maybe try some of the stuff at the parts store for passing smog tests, make sure that your EGR is working if you have one, also you might need to find the original smog pump stuff. I have never tried and don't know if it will actually work, but I have heard of people stuffing sponges into the exhaust to help pass.

Make sure the o2 sensor is working or replace it.. If truck had carb originally it should be a feed back carb.. Lean it out as best you can and give it another try.

What good would a working O2 sensor do a truck with a carb?

I had to reread it, Toyota never had an Aisin carb that was a feed back carb to the best of my knowledge, I think that was usually a Domestic thing.

Take it to the mechanic and tell them to get it to pass.

Best advice I know is find an 22RE with the injection and put it back original. Or just make it totally off-road.
