87 4X4 PU Head Bolt Issue

I have a 22r carb engine in an 87 I'm trying to get running. I have the head off right now and noticed that 2 of the head bolts show excessive heat. The threads look as if they have been exposed to exhaust gasses. They are dry and charred looking. The other bolts are moist with a coating of oil. This engine has a problem with overheating. Can anyone comment on the bolt issue. Only thing I can figure is that I have a crack in the cylinder wall??

Before you tore it apart you should have done compression tests and cylinder leak down tests..... with out those information is a bit limited.... You should check the head for cracks and warpage its prob warped. Can u visiually see cracks in the cylinder walls? Do anyone of the cylinders and or piston tops look cleaner than the others? Pics? Those bolts should have a bit of oil on them its normal.... Your going to need new head bolts for your job anyway.... IF the motor was over heating the bolts were constantly streched along with the rest of the motor so its no doubt they show issue.

Yeah..Once I saw the bolt issue I knew I should have done a compression check but I spaced it. Initially I set out to replace the timing set and oil pump but now that I have the bolt issue I'm not sure how to procede. I may have to put it back together to determine what's going on here. I can't think of anything that would cause this but a crack somewhere in the cylinder so I thought I'd ask around. Thanks for your input.

Have a machine shop check the head. I sent mine in to have a broken spark plug removed, and a general going over, they found a crack. I got a new head from LCe.

That makes sense. If the cylinder wall was cracked my guess is that the crank case would be pressurized and I don't think that's the case. Thanks

No cracks are visable.
No difference in the cylinders or piston tops either.

Do you by chance know where the head bolts came from.

there have been issues with the rear bolts on the exhaust side of the engine showing the signs you are describing .

I did know what caused this but can`t recall right now .

The worst case came from the right side 2nd bolt back. Another less severe came from the right left side 2nd one in from the back.

Those two bolts are always coked up, due to their location in the engine. They hold the head down between #1 and #2 cylinders (forward bolt) and #3 and #4 cylidners (rearward bolt) Its common on every 20R, 22R, and 22RE that I have ever seen to have them coked up and very hard to hear out.

Make sure that you get those holes cleaned out, or the head bolts will not torque correctly to spec.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful and much appreciated...
After I get this back together I'll:
Fab a flat bed
Paint the cab
Install a lift and tires and roll cage
Gut and replace the interior

I've got the bed off right now and the frame painted but it's 5 degrees outside and the garage is a little on the cold side.
