Have a leak on the front drive shaft connecting into the transfer case. I removed the cover and got to the bearing. the cover has a seal on the inside i cannot seem to remove. Its caked in there, and there is a metal shield that i cannot remove and it looks like you need to take it out to properly install the new seal. Have a few photos that sum it up. any help on replacing this is greatly appreciated, only could find threads on newer models where the seal sits on the outside.

You cannot view the photos?, im having trouble attaching them in another way. Are there threads on replacing this seal? I've looked everywhere, only to find output shaft seal replacement threads on an 01 runner. Its simular, but the seal doesn't sit inside the companion flange like mine does, it pops right out, without removing the dirt shield. this is that thread, hopefully it will narrow down what I'm talking about: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-ge...ow-diyers.html

Figured out the problem. take a large socket and punch it out the inner metal over a vice. The new replacement gaskets do not actually sit the same as the factory ones. They sit on the inside of the outter metal piece that faces the drive shaft, when the factory ones sit in the middle of the two metal pieces you punch out. Therefore the inside metal piece is no longer needed because the new gasket is actually the same shape and form of that metal making a better seal. No more leaks. Hopefully this answers anyone's questions with the same problem.
