80 yota needs help!

Hi i just bought a 80 yota and put in 4wd for the first time today and it made a bad grinding and clanking noise and the front end was bouncing up and down when i moved then when i tried to take it out of 4wd i could not shift back into 2H and had to reverse to get it to let me shift to 2H is this a bad transfer case or a bad axle? what do i have to do to fix it, I have a extra t-case but condition is unknown
