4WD Troubleshooting

I have a 96 4Runner Ltd with 270,000 miles. Recently (in the last snowstorm) my 4wd failed to engage. I hear the motor that attempts to engage whir for a few seconds and then stops like it always has to engage the 4wd but no light on dash and no 4WD.

Anybody have any troubleshooting suggestions?

This is written for the earlier trucks, but the general troubleshooting information should apply:

Thanks 4Crawler, I had seen that but since it was for earlier years I didn't know if it applied or not. I'll give it a shot and let you know. Thanks!

I hit the library and did a little research, seems that there is a difference in the '96 system from previous years. In '96 they started with something called a "One Touch 2 - 4 system" that used an electric accuator instead of the vacuum ADD type system. Found a Clymers guide with a bit of troubleshooting info so I'm going to crawl under there and see what I can see.

Main thing is there was a big change from '95 to the '96 year systems. There are actually 2 different systems in '96 so I have to figure out which I have.
