4WD Tansfer Case Shifter Position

Hello everyone, need to settle this. Tried searching the forum and Google with no luck, just debates or unanswered threads.

Since I purchased my 95 Tacoma, the 4WD shifter has sat in the neutral position. When my friend saw it he said it should be in 2H when driving around in 2WD. However, I have others telling me it does not matter which one. I do not see how it sitting in Neutral while the hubs aren't locked causing any damage. What say you?

Thanks!

If it was truly in neutral position ,the truck would be immobile.

This isn't the main tranny shifter, this one is the small one to the left that's for the 4WD. I'm 100% it's in neutral, second position from the right.

Something appears to be messed up. If it's in neutral I don't honk it should move. I will get in my wife's 98 runner tomorrow and try it.

You have us confused for sure we'll need photos.

You describe an automatic transmission & tcase, shifter to the left not the rear. Then describe a manual transmissions shifter knob pattern..

If it's actually an automatic you need your shift linkage adjusted.

In either case you can't have it in neutral and still drive.

Ahhh I see, my apologies for not being clear. It is a 4WD truck with an auto trans. My question pertains to the smaller shifter you see in the picture below:

It case it wasnt clear on the shift knob or its been changed..

Transfercase shifr pattern is a J shape.

top left is 2H(2wd)
bottom left is 4H

top right is 4L
below that is neutral..

the only time your transfer is in neutral is the change over from 4high to 4low, it gives the gear a chance to sync..
