Quote: That's about one of the dumbest things that you can do.

One of the first rules of wheeling is NEVER wheel alone.

It's dangerous enough for the seasoned drivers, but for newbe's it's simply asking for to much especially in some area even the slightest bit remote. By your own statement of not wanting the leave you and your friends stranded, you pretty much say it all.

You don't know much about the vehicle, you don't know what it can do and, most importantly, you don't know what it can't do.

That's simply asking for trouble and possibly creating more bad press for wheelers.

Quote: What did, the truth ?

Fred
Actually fred, the truth is, is that I am a full time student with a full time job. I have a family that requires full time attention (as I type my wife is looking at me like 'why the heck is he wasting time on that computer when he could be doing something productive, and she is probably right, and a five year old that is asking if he can get on the computer to play on pbskids.com). The little time that I don't have I spend studying. The last time I had fun, if you want to call it that, I was playing pool with a buddy... about 3 months ago, and I was able to do so because I was unemployed at the time and in between jobs for a whole week. So that freed up some time. No, the truth is, is that my freinds and I have gone 4wheeling before and we are all too aware of what might happen out there, and for myself if something was to happen then it wouldn't be too off-par with the rest of my life.

Some more truth in the matter is that if you were to come on to this thread and simply state your point I would have really put allot more thought into it, but the smug manner in which you did so turned me off to whatever you had to say. Case in point "That's simply asking for trouble and possibly creating more bad press for wheelers." So... you really expect me to believe that if I was to get stranded out there (which isn't very realistic since it is a very popular place for 4wheelers in Texas, around this time 2 years ago I went there to find at least a couple people every mile camped out, so at the very least I can get a ride back to civilization without putting someone out too badly) that it would somehow make press and then there would be people opening up there papers the next day saying "darn those 4-wheeling maniacs causing havec out there getting stranded and such". That was one of a few possible senarios I made up to make since of that statement, the other senarios that I could think of still didn't totally make since of the seriousness that you were trying to emphisize. Another one is "One of the first rules of wheeling is NEVER wheel alone." I understand this and like I said before I would thank you if I thought you were sincerely worried about me and my freinds, but I don't beleive this is the case. I beleive that your ego took over on these particular postings and you wanted to point out the big mistake this stupid newbie was making.

So let me go ahead and feed the ego and say "ALL HAIL FRED, PLEASE TEACH US THE WAYS OF 4x4 IN ALL OF YOUR YEARS OF WISDOM, I AM BUT A LOWLY NEWBIE AND HAVE NO CLUE OF HOW ANYTHING WORKS IN THE WORLD. I HAD NO CLUE THAT THE POSSIBILTY OF GETTING STRANDED WAS REMOTLY THERE. OH MIGHTY FRED PLEASE SHINE YOUR LIGHT UPON THE SO THAT I MAY BATH IN THE LIGHT OF WHAT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS".

Yeah I must confess... my wife and I wheel alone most of the time. But the areas we wheel are often almost too crowded. There have been a few times like wheeling Pearl pass or Black Bear pass that other people can be pretty scarce though and I use extra caution and go prepared for self recovery (that's the main reason I bought a winch) My wife can spot me though the tough spots pretty good and with dual lockers I rarely need help.

Well...
Thanks for all your help guys. I was just being overly cautious it seems. When It got on sand everything worked out fine with no binding of any sort. Its seems that the gravel that I was on wasn't loose enough (even though I could swear that I was "getting loose" on those turns"). It was a great trip and if you ever find yourself in South Texas I highly recommend going down padre island, the farther you go the looser the sand and the more isolated it is (if that is your type of thing)

Is there a ferry to the island or a bridge? Glad it worked out.

I wheel alone, but as others have said it is not the greatest idea. If you choose to do so, keep the following in mind:
1. Be prepared to walk out to the nearest well travelled road (30 miles will take a day minimum)
2. Ease back on the "daredevil factor"
3. Have a good buddy that can help you extracate abandoned vehicle
4. When recovering a vehicle that is abandoned, don't be surprised if it is vandalized, especially in a high use area.

It is a bridge. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...UTF8&z=12&om=1 It looks like a 10 hour drive from OK city. Well worth it if you plan on camping a couple night at the worlds largest stretch of "uncivilized beach".

budro, One thing you might check for the noise at full turn is the bump stops. It's a pretty common problem. They can make a heck of a noise at full lock, a little grease goes a long way.
