Depending on the model-year of the vehicle, there's either a sticker on the glove box or on the top of your sun visor.
Of course, if you didn't buy the vehicle new, it could have been removed by a previous owner.

4x4 shift/highway driving
hey all.
my 4x4 stick also has aftermarket knob. long story short (and yes this is very much a noob question), my friend borrowed my truck and I think left it in the wrong gear. I just want to put into highway driving clear roads on pavement. Which gear do I want that in, I think neutral on the 4x4 stick, I know that my truck has to be in reverse to switch that gear (not sure if that means locking hubs or not). its a 91 4runner manual tranny. thanks for all the help!

You want 2H on the transfer case (4WD) stick, typically all the way back (4H), then push all the way left and then all the way forward (2H). If you have manual hubs, unlock them, if the truck has the automatic differential disconnect, then 2H should unlock the front axle automatically.
