i have a 4runner i think its a '89, 5 speed that keeps popping out of reverse. as soon as you start letting out the clutch and it gets pressure on it it pops out. it dosent come all the way out tho. it dosent go to neutral. tryed holding it in but does nothing to help. it just started doing it one day. i thought it might be a bent shifting fork or somthing so tore the shifter off and no forks. any help??

 

Shifter seat and bushing might as well do your transfer case one as well while your in there.

when the shifter was off i notices hard rubber like pieces everywhere. how hard is it to change the shifter seat?

 

It's incredibly easy..
20 minutes maybe.

 

Yep. Thats the shifter seat that has disintegrated into a bagillion pieces.

 

anything else that would make it pop out of reverse??

 

why not start with the obvious first?
